REBUILD
THE RATIO.
WOMEN MAKE UP LESS THAN 10% OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY.
Despite interest from a young age, women continue to be underrepresented in STEM related fields. While 74% of teen girls show interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – women make up only 28% of the current STEM workforce. In construction alone, the disparity is even greater. Women make up only 9.9% of the workforce.
At Suffolk Construction, women represent 28% of the organization. While that makes them an industry leader, they wanted to do better.
Rebuild the Ratio, a commitment to increasing women’s representation in STEM, launched on International Women’s Day 2021 alongside Suffolk’s announcement that they were pledging to increase the number of women in their workforce from 28% to 38% in the next 10 years. They also entered into a 10-year partnership with Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and YouthBuild Boston to develop a national Suffolk Construction 101 Curriculum customized for girls 5-17 years of age, fostering future generations of girls’ and young women’s interest in STEM.
This production was a collaboration led by an incredibly talented group of women. In total, 18 out of 30 crew members were women. If you add cast and editor to that number, it’s 26 out of 38 - almost 70%.
